Plant description

Ficus elastica ‘Abidjan’ is a compact rubber plant with a calm, architectural shape and deep, glossy foliage. Delivered at approximately 55 cm tall in a Ø17 cm nursery pot, it’s an easy way to add reliable greenery to a living room, hallway or workspace without demanding daily attention.

This variety is known for its thick, oval leaves in a dark green tone with subtle warm, reddish accents along the midrib. The leaves have a naturally polished surface that catches light softly, making the plant read as tidy and considered even in minimal interiors. Its upright growth habit keeps it neat on the floor, on a plant stand, or on a low cabinet.

Plant care

  • Light requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Tolerates partial shade, but grows slower. Avoid harsh direct midday sun, which can mark the leaves.
  • Watering routine: Water when the top 2–4 cm of soil feels dry. In most homes this is about once a week in the growing season and less in winter. Empty any excess water from the outer pot/saucer.
  • Humidity preferences: Moderate indoor humidity. The plant copes well with normal home conditions; occasional leaf wiping helps in drier rooms.
  • Temperature range: 18–26°C. Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.

Placement in the home

Place your Ficus elastica ‘Abidjan’ where it receives steady daylight without strong sun. A few steps back from a south- or west-facing window works well, as does an east-facing position. In a brighter room it keeps a more compact habit and develops stronger colour, while in lower light it remains resilient but grows more slowly. Use a simple cachepot to match Scandinavian interiors and to protect surfaces from moisture.

Care tips

Choose a well-draining potting mix and ensure the pot has drainage holes. Rotate the plant every couple of weeks for even growth. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep the surface able to photosynthesise efficiently. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer, then pause or reduce feeding through the darker months.

Note: Like other rubber plants, Ficus elastica contains sap that can irritate skin and is best kept out of reach of pets and small children.
