Monstera Adansonii Monkey Leaf – Green
Plant description
The Monstera Monkey Leaf (Monstera adansonii) is a compact indoor plant known for its oval leaves with natural perforations (“holes”), often searched for as the Swiss cheese vine or gatenplant. This plant is delivered in a Ø12 cm nursery pot and measures approximately 25–30 cm in height at the time of dispatch. Its fresh green foliage and relaxed growth habit make it an easy choice for calm, modern interiors where you want greenery without a lot of space.
Unlike the larger-leaved Monstera deliciosa, Monkey Leaf stays more delicate in scale, with thinner, more finely cut foliage. Over time it can grow upright when supported, or trail gently from a shelf. New leaves often start with fewer openings; the distinctive holes develop as the plant matures and receives consistent light.
Plant care
- Light requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Tolerates medium light; avoid strong, direct midday sun which can scorch leaves.
- Watering routine: Water when the top 2–4 cm of soil feels dry. Keep evenly moist but never waterlogged; reduce watering in winter.
- Humidity preferences: Moderate to higher humidity (around 50%+) supports larger, healthier leaves. Adapts well to normal indoor humidity.
- Temperature range: 18–26°C is ideal. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.
Growth and characteristics
- Plant species: Monstera adansonii (Monkey Leaf / Swiss cheese vine)
- Mature height: Can reach 1–2 m indoors with support; length varies with pruning and light
- Leaf type: Soft green, oval leaves with natural perforations; new growth emerges tightly furled and unfolds over several days
- Growth speed: Moderate; faster during spring and summer with stable light and regular feeding
Placement in the home
Place your Monstera Monkey Leaf where it receives steady daylight without harsh sun—on a sideboard in the living room, a shelf near an east- or north-facing window, or a bright office corner. In lower light it will grow more slowly and may produce smaller leaves with fewer holes. If you prefer a trailing look, let stems cascade from a bookcase; for a more upright form, guide it onto a small moss pole or plant support.
Care tips
Use a well-draining potting mix (houseplant soil blended with perlite or orchid bark works well) to prevent soggy roots. Empty excess water from the outer pot or saucer after watering. Feed every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Rotate the pot occasionally for even growth, and wipe leaves with a damp cloth to keep the surface clean and improve light uptake.
