Plant description

Ficus Abidjan (Ø27 cm, approx. 90 cm tall) is a tropical indoor plant from the rubber plant family, known for its thick, glossy leaves and calm, architectural growth. This variety stands out with deep green foliage that can read almost black in lower light, with subtle red midribs and new growth that emerges in warmer tones. Delivered in a practical black nursery pot, it is ready to place inside a decorative planter of your choice.

The leaves are oval and slightly leathery, designed by nature to hold moisture and stay looking fresh between waterings. With multiple upright stems and a dense crown, Ficus Abidjan brings greenery with structure—useful when you want a plant that looks composed rather than trailing or sprawling. It fits naturally into Scandinavian interiors where the palette is quiet and materials are honest.

Plant care

  • Light requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Tolerates medium light, but growth will slow. Avoid strong direct midday sun, which can mark the leaves.
  • Watering routine: Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Water thoroughly, then let excess drain away. Avoid leaving the pot standing in water to reduce the risk of root rot.
  • Humidity preferences: Average indoor humidity suits it well. In very dry rooms, occasional misting or placing the pot near other plants can help keep leaf edges tidy.
  • Temperature range: Prefers 18–24°C. Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.

Growth and characteristics

  • Plant species: Ficus elastica ‘Abidjan’ (rubber plant)
  • Approximate size at delivery: ↕ 90 cm, pot diameter Ø27 cm
  • Leaf type: Thick, glossy, oval leaves with a darker tone and red midrib; new leaves emerge from a sheath
  • Growth speed: Moderate growth in spring and summer with steady light and regular watering

Placement in the home

Place your Ficus Abidjan where it receives consistent daylight without harsh sun—near an east- or west-facing window is often ideal. In a living room corner, beside a sofa, or near a dining area, the upright form reads clean and balanced. It also works well in a home office, where the dense leaves create a calm backdrop. If placed in lower light (such as a hallway), expect slower growth and slightly more open spacing between leaves.

Care tips

Rotate the plant every few weeks for even growth and to prevent leaning. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep the natural shine—this also helps the plant photosynthesise efficiently. Feed with a balanced houseplant fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer; reduce or pause feeding in winter. As with most ficus, the milky sap can irritate skin and is toxic if ingested, so keep it out of reach of children and pets.
