Ficus Belize Ficus Elastica – Green, Cream
Plant description
Ficus Belize (often sold as a variegated Ficus elastica, “rubber plant”) is an indoor plant known for thick, glossy leaves with soft variegation. This specimen is delivered at approximately 80 cm in height in a Ø27 cm grow pot. The foliage shows a calm mix of deep green with lighter, creamy edges, while new leaves can emerge with warmer, reddish tones—an easy way to add colour without busy patterns.
The rubber plant’s upright growth and sturdy stems make it a reliable choice for modern interiors. Compared with finer-leaved ficus varieties, Ficus elastica holds its shape well and is forgiving if you occasionally miss a watering. The leathery leaves also collect less visible dust, and they are simple to wipe clean for a consistently fresh look.
Plant care
- Light requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It tolerates medium light, but growth will be slower and variegation may soften. Avoid harsh, direct midday sun that can scorch the leaves.
- Watering routine: Water thoroughly when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Let excess water drain away; do not leave the pot standing in water to reduce risk of root rot.
- Humidity preferences: Average indoor humidity is fine. If your home is very dry (especially in winter), occasional misting or a pebble tray can support new growth.
- Temperature range: Best at 18–26°C. Keep away from cold drafts, hot radiators, and sudden temperature changes, which can lead to leaf drop.
Growth and characteristics
- Plant species: Ficus elastica ‘Belize’ (rubber plant)
- Approx. size at delivery: ↕80 cm, pot Ø27 cm
- Leaf type: Large, oval, glossy leaves with variegated green and creamy margins; new growth may show warmer red tones
- Growth speed: Moderate in spring and summer with good light and steady watering
Placement in the home
Place Ficus Belize where it can receive stable, indirect daylight—near an east- or west-facing window is often ideal. In a living room it works well beside a sofa or low sideboard; in a hallway it brings structure if there is sufficient natural light. In an office, position it a short distance from the window to avoid direct sun on the leaves and to keep the plant from drying too quickly.
Care tips
Rotate the pot a quarter turn every couple of weeks to keep growth even. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and support efficient photosynthesis. Feed with a balanced houseplant fertiliser every 2–4 weeks during the growing season (spring–summer); reduce or pause feeding in the darker months. If you want a fuller shape, pinch or prune in spring—always using clean, sharp tools. As with many ficus plants, moving it frequently can cause temporary leaf drop, so choose a steady spot and let it settle.
