Ficus Binnendijkii Alii – Green, Glossy
Plant description
Ficus binnendijkii ‘Alii’ is an elegant indoor ficus known for its long, narrow, glossy leaves that fall softly from upright stems. This live houseplant is delivered at approximately 100 cm tall in a Ø21 cm nursery pot, making it an easy way to add height and calm greenery to a room without taking up much floor space.
The ‘Alii’ differs from the more common rubber plant ficus with a lighter, airier silhouette. Its slender, deep green leaves create a fine texture that suits Scandinavian interiors—clean lines, muted tones, and natural materials—while still offering a distinctly tropical, full look. As the plant matures, it develops a denser crown and a more defined, tree-like form.
Plant care
- Light requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Tolerates medium light, but growth will be slower. Avoid strong direct sun, especially midday, which can scorch the leaves.
- Watering routine: Water when the top 2–4 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly moist, but never waterlog—empty any excess water from the outer pot or saucer.
- Humidity preferences: Average indoor humidity works well. If the air is very dry (common in winter), occasional misting or a humidifier helps keep leaf tips tidy.
- Temperature range: Best between 18–26°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.

Placement in the home
Place this ficus where it receives steady daylight without harsh sun—near a bright window with a sheer curtain, a few steps back from a south-facing window, or close to an east/west window. Its vertical shape works especially well beside a sofa, in a living room corner, next to a sideboard, or in a hallway with natural light. In offices, it adds greenery without demanding frequent attention.
Care tips
Ficus plants prefer consistency. Try to avoid moving it often, as changes in light and temperature can cause leaf drop. Rotate the pot every few weeks for even growth. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to keep them glossy and to help the plant photosynthesise efficiently. Feed with a balanced houseplant fertiliser monthly during spring and summer, and reduce feeding in the darker months.
