Plant description

Ficus Bornholm is a young fig plant (Ficus carica) supplied in a Ø15 cm nursery pot with an approximate height of 40 cm at delivery. With its softly lobed, fresh green leaves and upright, woody stems, it brings a calm, Mediterranean character to indoor spaces while staying easy to place on a windowsill, shelf, or small plant stand.

“Bornholm” is grown as a fruiting fig variety, valued for its decorative foliage and its potential to set figs when given enough light and warmth. Like most figs, it develops a natural, lightly sculptural form over time—new growth appears at the tips, and the plant responds well to simple pruning when you want a neater silhouette.

Plant care

  • Light requirements: Bright light is essential. Place in a sunny window with several hours of direct sun if possible (south- or west-facing is ideal). In lower light, growth slows and fruiting is unlikely.
  • Watering routine: Water thoroughly when the top 2–4 cm of soil feels dry. Let excess water drain away; figs dislike sitting in waterlogged soil. Reduce watering slightly in winter.
  • Humidity preferences: Normal indoor humidity is suitable. In very dry rooms, occasional leaf misting or a nearby water tray can help keep leaves looking fresh.
  • Temperature range: Best at typical indoor temperatures 18–26°C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 10–12°C, especially near windows in winter.

Growth and characteristics

  • Plant species: Ficus carica (fig) – “Bornholm”
  • Approx. size at delivery: ↕40 cm, pot Ø15 cm
  • Leaf type: Large, lobed leaves with a slightly textured surface; deciduous tendency in low light or during seasonal change
  • Growth speed: Moderate during spring and summer when light levels are high

Placement in the home

Place Ficus Bornholm where it receives the most light you can offer. A bright kitchen window, a sunny living room sill, or a spot close to a glazed balcony door works well. If you move it outdoors in summer, choose a sheltered, warm position and introduce it gradually to stronger sun to avoid leaf scorch. Indoors, rotate the pot every couple of weeks for even growth and a balanced crown.

Care tips

Repotting: If roots fill the pot, repot in spring into a slightly larger planter with well-draining soil. A mix designed for Mediterranean plants or a quality potting soil amended with perlite works well.

Feeding: Feed every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Pause feeding in winter.

Pruning: Light pruning in late winter/early spring helps maintain shape and encourages bushier growth. Always use clean, sharp secateurs.

Leaf drop: Some leaf drop can occur after moving location or during darker months; keep light levels high and watering consistent.
