Ficus Carica Bornholm Fig Tree – Green
Plant description
Ficus carica ‘Bornholm’ is a compact fig plant delivered in a Ø19 cm nursery pot with an approximate height of 50 cm. It has distinctive, hand-shaped leaves with a matte green surface and an airy, upright growth habit. As an indoor plant (or a sheltered patio plant in season), it offers the character of a small Mediterranean fruit tree in a size that suits Scandinavian homes.
The leaves are naturally lobed and slightly textured, giving the plant a calm, architectural look rather than dense foliage. New growth appears light green and deepens as it hardens off. With the right light and steady care, Ficus carica can develop into a fuller, branching plant over time. Like most figs, it responds well to a consistent routine and rewards patience with stronger growth each season.
Plant care
- Light requirements: Very bright light; a sunny window is ideal. Introduce direct sun gradually in spring to avoid leaf scorch.
- Watering routine: Water thoroughly when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Let excess water drain away; do not leave the pot standing in water.
- Humidity preferences: Average indoor humidity is fine. Keep away from dry heat sources (radiators) to reduce leaf drop.
- Temperature range: 18–26°C during active growth. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 10–12°C.
Growth and characteristics
- Plant species: Ficus carica (fig)
- Approximate size at delivery: ↕50 cm in a Ø19 cm grower pot
- Leaf type: Lobed, matte green leaves with visible veining
- Growth speed: Moderate in spring and summer with strong light; slower in winter
Placement in the home
Place your fig plant where it gets the most light: a south- or west-facing window is often the best choice. It works well on a bright kitchen floor spot, beside a living room window, or in a calm corner where the leaves have space to spread. If you move it outdoors in warmer months, choose a sheltered position and acclimatise it slowly to full sun and wind.
Care tips
Repotting: If roots begin to circle the nursery pot or watering becomes difficult to manage, repot in spring into a slightly larger pot with a free-draining soil mix. A pot with a drainage hole is recommended.
Seasonal rhythm: Figs can drop leaves when light levels fall in autumn and winter. Reduce watering during this period and resume a regular routine as new growth starts in spring.
Feeding: During the growing season, feed lightly every 2–4 weeks with a balanced fertiliser. Pause feeding in winter.
Leaf care: Dust the leaves occasionally with a soft, damp cloth so the plant can photosynthesise efficiently in lower indoor light.
