Ficus Elastica Belize – Green, Burgundy

Plant description

Ficus Elastica Belize is a live indoor rubber plant with thick, glossy leaves in deep green with warm burgundy tones and a reddish midrib. Delivered at an approximate height of 55 cm in a Ø17 cm nursery pot, it’s an easy way to add structured greenery to shelves, sideboards, and brighter corners without taking up much floor space.

This variety grows upright with a clear central stem and sturdy, oval leaves that hold their shape well. New leaves typically emerge from a coloured sheath at the top, then deepen in tone as they mature. Like other Ficus elastica, it contains a milky latex sap and is grown for decorative use only.

Ficus elastica is often chosen as a long-lasting houseplant for calm interiors because it keeps a clean silhouette and copes well with typical home conditions when placed correctly. It is also widely recognised as an air-cleaning indoor plant, making it a practical choice for living rooms and workspaces.

Plant care

• Light requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It can handle some gentle morning or late-afternoon sun, but avoid harsh midday sun close to the glass to prevent leaf scorch. In lower light it will grow more slowly.
• Watering routine: Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. In most homes this is around every 7–14 days, depending on season and temperature. Always let excess water drain away; do not leave the pot standing in water.
• Humidity preferences: Moderate household humidity is sufficient. If the air is very dry (especially in winter), occasional wiping of the leaves helps keep them clean and supports healthy growth.
• Temperature range: 18–26°C is ideal. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below ~15°C.

Care tips

Use a well-draining potting mix (a houseplant soil with added perlite works well). Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser, then pause in winter. Wipe the leaves with a soft damp cloth to remove dust and help the plant photosynthesise efficiently. If sap appears when pruning, handle with care as it can be irritating.
