Ficus Lyrata – Green, Glossy Leaves
Plant description
Ficus lyrata (fiddle-leaf fig) is a classic indoor plant known for its large, violin-shaped leaves with a deep green, glossy surface. This plant is supplied at approximately 100 cm tall in a Ø27 cm grower’s pot, making it a good choice when you want visible greenery without filling an entire corner. Its upright growth and strong leaf structure suit calm, modern interiors where you want a clear, architectural silhouette.
The foliage is broad and slightly sculptural, with pronounced veins and a firm, leathery feel. New leaves typically emerge lighter green and deepen over time. In the right position, Ficus lyrata grows steadily and can develop into a taller indoor tree with a defined trunk. Like many ficus, it prefers stability—consistent light, even watering, and minimal moving once it has settled.
Plant care
- Light requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It can take gentle morning or late-afternoon sun, but avoid strong midday sun close to the glass.
- Watering routine: Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Water thoroughly, then let excess drain away. Reduce watering in winter.
- Humidity preferences: Moderate humidity. It benefits from slightly higher humidity, especially in heated rooms; occasional misting is optional.
- Temperature range: 18–26°C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.

Placement in the home
Place your fiddle-leaf fig where it receives steady daylight—near a bright window with filtered light works well. In a living room, it sits naturally beside a sofa or low sideboard; in a hallway, it needs a light source nearby rather than deep shade. In home offices, it adds height without taking much floor space, as long as it isn’t positioned directly above a radiator or in a frequent draft.
Care tips
To keep the leaves clean and able to photosynthesise efficiently, wipe them gently with a soft, damp cloth. Rotate the pot a quarter turn every couple of weeks for even growth. If you repot, choose a sturdy pot with drainage and a well-aerated houseplant mix; a heavier cachepot can add stability as the plant grows. If leaves drop, the most common causes are irregular watering, low light, or a sudden change in position—adjust one factor at a time and allow the plant to recover.
