Plant description

Ficus lyrata (fiddle-leaf fig) is a living indoor tree with large, violin-shaped leaves and a clear, upright trunk. This plant is supplied in a 27 cm nursery pot and has an approximate height of 120 cm at delivery (measured including the pot). Its structured silhouette and glossy green foliage make it a natural choice for calm, modern interiors where you want height and greenery without visual noise.

Originating from the rainforests of West Africa, Ficus lyrata is known for its broad, leathery leaves with visible veining and a gently waved edge. In the home it grows as a slow-to-moderate indoor tree, developing a stronger crown over time when it receives consistent light and stable conditions. Like many ficus varieties, it prefers to settle in one spot—once you find the right placement, it rewards you with steady growth and healthy, firm leaves.

Plant care

  • Light requirements: Bright, indirect light. Tolerates some gentle morning or late afternoon sun; avoid strong midday sun close to the glass.
  • Watering routine: Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Water thoroughly, then let excess drain away; do not leave the pot standing in water.
  • Humidity preferences: Moderate humidity suits it well. If indoor air is very dry (especially in winter), occasional misting or a humidity tray helps keep leaf edges neat.
  • Temperature range: Best at typical indoor temperatures, 18–26°C. Keep away from cold drafts and hot, dry air from radiators.

Growth and characteristics

  • Plant species: Ficus lyrata (fiddle-leaf fig)
  • Approx. size at delivery: H120 cm, pot Ø27 cm
  • Leaf type: Large, glossy, violin-shaped leaves with pronounced veining
  • Growth speed: Slow to moderate indoors, strongest in spring and summer with good light

Placement in the home

Place your Ficus lyrata near a bright window with filtered light—ideal for a living room corner, next to a sofa, or by a dining area where it can add height and softness. In bedrooms or home offices, keep it close to a light source rather than deep in the room. Rotate the pot a quarter turn every few weeks for even growth and a balanced crown.

Care tips

Keep the foliage clean by wiping the leaves with a soft, damp cloth; this helps the plant photosynthesise efficiently and keeps the natural sheen. Use a well-draining indoor plant soil and consider a pot with drainage holes inside a decorative planter. If you repot, move up one size at a time to avoid excess wet soil around the roots. Prune lightly in the growing season to shape the crown and remove any damaged leaves.

Please note: Ficus plants can be irritating if ingested and may not be suitable for homes with pets or small children who chew on leaves.
