Ficus Elastica Robusta Rubber Plant – Green
Plant description
Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’ (rubber plant) is a compact, sturdy indoor plant with thick, oval leaves in a deep green tone and a subtle natural sheen. Delivered at an approximate height of 55 cm in a Ø17 cm nursery pot, it is an easy way to add calm, structured greenery to shelves, sideboards, and smaller floor spaces without needing constant attention.
The ‘Robusta’ variety is valued for its firm growth and broad foliage. New leaves emerge upright and gradually open into wider, leathery blades with a clear central vein. In Scandinavian interiors it works especially well where you want a clean silhouette: the plant reads as composed and architectural rather than loose or trailing.
Plant care
- Light requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Tolerates medium light; avoid harsh midday sun which can mark the leaves.
- Watering routine: Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. In most homes this means roughly once a week in the growing season and less in winter. Empty any excess water from the outer pot or saucer.
- Humidity preferences: Average indoor humidity is fine. If the air is very dry, occasional misting or wiping the leaves supports a fresh look.
- Temperature range: Thrives at typical indoor temperatures 18–26°C. Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below ~15°C.

Placement in the home
Place your Ficus elastica where it receives steady daylight without intense sun: a few steps back from a south-facing window, or close to an east- or west-facing window. It suits a living room corner, a bright hallway console, or an office where you want greenery that keeps its shape. Rotate the pot every couple of weeks for even growth and a balanced crown.
Care tips
Choose a well-draining potting mix and consider repotting after it has settled in, especially if you prefer a decorative planter. A breathable, airy mix helps prevent root issues—important for rubber plants that dislike standing in wet soil. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust so the plant can photosynthesise efficiently and keep its natural shine.
Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks from spring to early autumn. Pause or reduce feeding in winter when growth slows.
Note: Like many ficus plants, the sap can be irritating and the plant is considered toxic if ingested. Place out of reach of curious pets and small children.
