Plant description

Calathea makoyana (often called the Peacock Plant) is a compact green houseplant valued for its patterned foliage and calm, graphic look. This plant is delivered in a Ø9 cm nursery pot and is approximately 9 cm tall at the time of shipping, making it well suited to smaller surfaces such as shelves, desks, and window-side tables.

The leaves are oval and lightly glossy, with layered green markings that read almost hand-painted. As new growth appears from the centre, the plant keeps a tidy, low profile rather than growing tall quickly. Calathea is also known for gentle leaf movement between day and night, a natural response to light that adds subtle life without demanding attention.

As an indoor plant, Calathea makoyana is chosen for rooms where you want greenery but prefer a softer, more controlled expression than large-leaf tropicals. It is a good option for plant groupings, especially when paired with neutral ceramics and natural materials.

Plant care

  • Light requirements: Bright, indirect light. Tolerates medium light; avoid direct sun, which can fade and scorch the leaves.
  • Watering routine: Keep the soil lightly and evenly moist. Water when the top 1–2 cm of soil feels dry, then let excess water drain away. Do not allow the pot to sit in water.
  • Humidity preferences: Prefers moderate to higher humidity (around 50–70%). Ideal for kitchens and bathrooms with daylight, or near a humidifier.
  • Temperature range: Typical indoor temperatures of 18–26°C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below ~15°C.

Growth and characteristics

  • Plant species: Calathea makoyana
  • Approx. size at delivery: About 9 cm tall in a Ø9 cm pot
  • Leaf type: Oval leaves with distinctive light-and-dark green patterning; undersides may show a warmer tone
  • Growth speed: Moderate indoors in stable warmth and humidity; grows by producing new leaves from the base

Placement in the home

Place Calathea makoyana where it receives soft daylight: a bright living room away from direct sun, a bedroom with filtered light, or a home office where you want a compact plant on a shelf or sideboard. If you keep it on a windowsill, choose an east- or north-facing window, or use a sheer curtain to diffuse stronger light.

Care tips

Use lukewarm water and consider filtered or low-limescale water if your tap water is hard—Calathea leaves can show brown edges when minerals build up. A well-draining potting mix helps prevent soggy roots; if you repot, choose a breathable mix and a pot with drainage holes. Wipe leaves gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and keep the patterns clear. If leaf tips dry, increase humidity slightly and check that the plant is not standing near a radiator.
