Plant description

Pachira aquatica (often called the money tree) is a compact green houseplant with a sturdy, woody trunk and glossy, hand-shaped leaves. This plant is delivered in a ⌀9 cm grower’s pot and has a neat, upright habit that works well in smaller spaces such as shelves, desks, and windowside tables. Its calm green foliage adds structure without taking over the room.

The Pachira’s leaves are made up of several narrow leaflets that spread like a small umbrella. The smooth, slightly shiny surface makes the plant look fresh even with simple care, and the thicker trunk stores moisture—one reason Pachira is known as a forgiving indoor plant for busy weeks.

This size is ideal if you want a young Pachira to grow with your home, or if you prefer a small plant that still reads clearly as a “tree” rather than a trailing plant.

Plant care

  • Light requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It also copes with medium light, but growth will be slower. Avoid harsh midday sun which can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering routine: Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Water thoroughly, then let excess drain away—Pachira dislikes sitting in water.
  • Humidity preferences: Average indoor humidity is fine. In very dry homes, occasional misting or placing it near other plants helps keep leaf tips tidy.
  • Temperature range: Best kept between 18–26°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.

Growth and characteristics

  • Plant species: Pachira aquatica
  • Approximate size at delivery: Supplied in a ⌀9 cm nursery pot; height can vary naturally per batch and season.
  • Leaf type: Palmate, glossy green leaves with multiple leaflets
  • Growth speed: Moderate growth in good light, slower in lower light

Placement in the home

Place your Pachira where it gets steady daylight without strong direct sun—on a sideboard near a window with a sheer curtain, on a bright office desk, or on a kitchen shelf with good ambient light. Because it stays tidy in a small pot, it also suits narrow spaces like hallway consoles, provided the area isn’t cold or drafty.

Care tips

Choose a planter with drainage or use a cachepot and keep the nursery pot inside, emptying any collected water after watering. Rotate the plant every few weeks for even growth. Wipe the leaves with a soft damp cloth to remove dust and help the plant photosynthesise efficiently. If you repot later, use a well-draining indoor plant mix and move up one pot size at a time.
