Stapelia Succulent Houseplant – Green
Plant description
Stapelia is a compact succulent houseplant known for its upright, ribbed stems and sculptural, cactus-like silhouette—without sharp spines. This plant arrives fresh from the grower in a practical Ø9 cm nursery pot and is approximately 20 cm tall at delivery. With its clean lines and muted green colour, Stapelia suits calm interiors where you want greenery that stays tidy and requires little attention.
Often called a “starfish flower” or “carrion flower” plant, Stapelia is grown mainly for its architectural stems and its unusual blooms. Flowering can occur in the right conditions, typically from mature growth; blooms are star-shaped and distinctive. As with all live plants, the exact form and number of stems may vary slightly from the photos—each plant develops its own natural character.
Plant care
- Light requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It also tolerates some gentle direct sun (morning or late afternoon). Avoid harsh midday sun behind glass if the plant is not acclimatised.
- Watering routine: Water sparingly. Let the potting mix dry out almost completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. In winter, reduce watering further.
- Humidity preferences: Average indoor humidity is sufficient. Stapelia prefers drier air over constantly humid conditions.
- Temperature range: 18–26°C is ideal. Keep above 10–12°C and protect from cold drafts and frost.
Growth and characteristics
- Plant species: Stapelia (succulent)
- Mature height: Typically 15–30 cm indoors, depending on age and conditions
- Leaf or flower type: Leafless, ribbed succulent stems; may produce star-shaped flowers on mature plants
- Growth speed: Slow to moderate; forms new stems from the base over time
Placement in the home
Place Stapelia where it gets consistent light and where the pot can dry out properly—on a windowsill with filtered light, a bright shelf, or a sideboard near a south- or west-facing window (with a little distance from the glass if the sun is strong). It works well in minimalist living rooms, kitchens, and home offices, especially where you want a compact plant that won’t sprawl.
Care tips
For best results, use a cactus/succulent potting mix or a free-draining soil blend and choose a decorative outer pot with room for airflow (avoid leaving the nursery pot standing in water). If you repot, do so in spring or early summer and size up only slightly—Stapelia prefers a snug pot. Rotate the plant occasionally for even growth, and wipe dust from the stems with a dry cloth to keep the surface clean.
