Phalaenopsis Orchid Rotterdam – Pink
Plant description
Kolibri Orchids “Rotterdam” is a flowering Phalaenopsis orchid with soft pink, speckled blooms and a compact growth habit. Delivered at approximately 45 cm tall in a nursery pot (Ø9 cm), it’s an easy-to-live-with houseplant for bright rooms where you want long-lasting flowers with minimal care.
This orchid is a multiflora-type Phalaenopsis, known for producing many smaller flowers along the stems rather than just a few large blooms. The flowers sit on slender, upright spikes above broad, glossy green leaves. The overall look is clean and architectural—well suited to calm Scandinavian interiors, whether you place it on its own or group it with ceramics and glass.
Phalaenopsis orchids are valued for their flowering period and their tidy footprint. With the Ø9 cm pot size, “Rotterdam” fits easily into a decorative cachepot on a sideboard, windowsill, or shelf. If you use a cover pot, choose one that leaves a little space around the nursery pot for airflow and easy removal when watering.
Plant care
- Light requirements: Bright, indirect light. A light spot near an east or north-facing window is ideal; avoid strong midday sun that can scorch leaves.
- Watering routine: About once a week, depending on season and indoor climate. Water by briefly soaking the nursery pot, then let it drain fully before placing it back.
- Humidity preferences: Moderate humidity. Keep away from very dry air from radiators or underfloor heating outlets.
- Temperature range: Best between 17–22°C. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Growth and characteristics
- Plant species: Phalaenopsis (moth orchid)
- Approximate size at delivery: Around 45 cm tall; nursery pot Ø9 cm
- Leaf / flower type: Glossy, oval leaves; many pink, speckled flowers on multiple flowering spikes
- Growth speed: Slow to moderate; typically blooms for weeks, then rests before producing new spikes
Placement in the home
Place the orchid where you naturally spend time—on a dining table, a kitchen counter away from heat sources, or a bedside shelf with steady daylight. Avoid positioning it next to a fruit bowl; ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which can shorten the life of the flowers. In darker homes, keep it close to a window and rotate the pot occasionally for even growth.
Care tips
Use the roots as a simple watering guide: silvery grey roots usually mean it’s time to water, while green roots indicate there is still moisture. Always let excess water drain away—standing water in a cover pot is the most common cause of orchid problems. Feed with a dedicated orchid fertiliser about once every two months during the growing period. After flowering, a resting phase is normal; keep care consistent and new spikes can develop with time.
