Monstera Deliciosa – Green, Split Leaves
Plant description
Monstera deliciosa, often called the hole plant, is a classic indoor plant with large, glossy green leaves that develop natural splits and openings as the plant matures. This plant is delivered at an approximate height of 65 cm in a Ø21 cm plastic nursery pot. Its upright, leafy form adds soft structure to calm interiors without needing complicated care.
The characteristic fenestrations (leaf holes and cuts) are not a defect—they are part of the Monstera’s natural growth. In a bright position the plant will steadily produce new leaves, and over time the foliage becomes more sculptural and defined. As with all live plants, each specimen is unique and may vary slightly in shape, leaf count, and degree of fenestration.
Plant care
- Light requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Tolerates medium light, but growth slows and leaves may stay smaller. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can scorch the foliage.
- Watering routine: Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. In spring and summer this is often weekly; in winter less. Water thoroughly, then let excess drain—do not leave the pot standing in water.
- Humidity preferences: Moderate humidity suits it well. If the air is very dry, occasional misting or placing the pot near other plants can help keep leaf edges neat.
- Temperature range: Normal indoor temperatures of 18–26°C. Keep away from cold drafts and avoid prolonged temperatures below 15°C.
Growth and characteristics
- Plant species: Monstera deliciosa
- Approx. size at delivery: ↕65 cm, pot Ø21 cm
- Leaf type: Large, glossy, deep green leaves with natural splits and holes (fenestrations) as the plant matures
- Growth habit: Upright, gradually climbing; can be supported with a moss pole or stake as it grows
Placement in the home
Place your Monstera a little back from a bright window, where it receives plenty of daylight without strong direct sun. It works well on the floor next to a sofa, in a quiet corner of the living room, or beside a sideboard where the leaves have space to expand. In offices and bedrooms, medium light is usually sufficient—just expect slower growth and fewer leaf openings.
Care tips
Rotate the plant every couple of weeks for even growth. Wipe the leaves with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and help the plant photosynthesise efficiently. If you repot, choose a breathable, well-draining mix (a potting soil blended with bark or perlite works well). Yellowing leaves are most often a sign of overwatering; crisp brown edges usually point to underwatering or very dry air.
