Plant description

Monstera deliciosa (often called the Swiss Cheese Plant) is a classic indoor foliage plant known for its large, glossy leaves with natural splits and openings. This plant is delivered at an approximate height of 60 cm in a 21 cm nursery pot, making it an easy size to place on the floor, a plant stand, or a low sideboard while it continues to grow.

In the home, Monstera develops strong, upright stems and larger, more fenestrated leaves over time—especially when given steady light and an even watering routine. It is valued for its calm, architectural silhouette: a clear green presence that works naturally with Scandinavian interiors, light woods, stone, and muted textiles.

Because Monstera is a climbing aroid, it also responds well to support. If you add a moss pole or simple stake later, the plant can grow more upright and produce larger leaves as it matures.

Plant care

  • Light requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Tolerates medium light, but growth will be slower. Avoid harsh, direct midday sun which can scorch leaves.
  • Watering routine: Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Water thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. Reduce watering in winter.
  • Humidity preferences: Moderate humidity is sufficient, but slightly higher humidity supports larger leaves and cleaner edges. Average indoor humidity works well.
  • Temperature range: Typical indoor temperatures of 18–26°C. Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below ~15°C.

Growth and characteristics

  • Plant species: Monstera deliciosa
  • Approx. size at delivery:60 cm, pot size Ø 21 cm
  • Leaf type: Large, glossy green leaves with characteristic splits/holes (fenestrations)
  • Growth habit: Upright to climbing; can be trained with a pole or left to grow naturally

Placement in the home

Place your Monstera a short distance from a bright window where it receives filtered light—ideal in a living room corner, beside a sofa, or near a dining area. It also suits a home office or bedroom with good daylight. In lower light, keep it closer to the window and rotate the pot occasionally to encourage even growth.

Care tips

Use a well-draining houseplant mix (for example potting soil blended with perlite and bark) to help prevent waterlogging. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and support efficient photosynthesis. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer (diluted as instructed), and pause feeding in the darker months. If aerial roots appear, they can be guided into the soil or left as-is—both are normal.
