Monstera Minima Rhaphidophora – Green
Plant description
Monstera Minima (commonly sold under this name, botanically Rhaphidophora tetrasperma) is a compact, fast-growing indoor climber with naturally split, deep green leaves. This plant is delivered in a Ø12 cm nursery pot with an approximate height of 25 cm, making it an easy choice for smaller spaces while still giving the recognisable “mini monstera” look.
The foliage is lighter and more delicate than the larger Monstera deliciosa, with clean fenestrations (leaf splits) that develop as the plant matures. Its growth habit is vining rather than self-standing: given a small moss pole, trellis, or simple support, it will gradually climb and produce larger leaves over time. Without support it will trail softly, which works well on shelves and plant stands.
Plant care
- Light requirements: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It also tolerates medium light, but growth will be slower and leaf splits may be less pronounced. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can mark the leaves.
- Watering routine: Water when the top 2–4 cm of soil feels dry. Soak thoroughly and let excess water drain away; do not leave the pot standing in water to reduce the risk of root rot.
- Humidity preferences: Moderate to higher humidity suits it well (around 40–60%+). It adapts to typical homes, but steadier humidity supports larger, cleaner foliage.
- Temperature range: 18–26°C is ideal. Keep away from cold drafts and aim to stay above 15°C.
Growth and characteristics
- Plant species: Rhaphidophora tetrasperma (“Monstera Minima”)
- Approximate size at delivery: Ø12 cm pot, ↕25 cm (measured including the pot)
- Leaf type: Glossy green leaves with natural splits; new leaves emerge rolled and unfurl over time
- Growth speed: Moderate to fast in the growing season when given bright light and regular watering
Placement in the home
Place Monstera Minima where you want greenery with a light, architectural shape: on a bookshelf, a sideboard in the living room, or a kitchen shelf with bright but filtered daylight. A spot 1–2 metres from an east- or west-facing window is often ideal. In lower-light corners it will stay healthy, but it may stretch toward the light; turning the pot a quarter turn every week or two helps keep the plant balanced.
Care tips
Use a well-draining houseplant mix (potting soil improved with perlite and a little bark works well) to keep the roots airy. Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted houseplant fertiliser, and reduce feeding in autumn and winter. Wipe leaves with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust so the plant can photosynthesise efficiently. If you prefer an upright look, add a slim support early—tying stems loosely encourages stronger, neater growth.
