Stapelia Succulent – Green, Ribbed Stems

Regular price €5,99

Plant description

Stapelia is a compact live succulent with upright, ribbed green stems and a neat, architectural growth habit. Sometimes called the “starfish flower” plant, it is best known for its sculptural, cactus-like silhouette and the occasional star-shaped bloom when grown in strong light. This Stapelia is delivered in a Ø6 cm nursery pot and measures approximately 15 cm in height at the time of shipping—an easy size for windowsills, shelves and small surfaces where you want greenery without taking up space.

In the product image, the plant shows multiple upright stems with defined ridges and small, soft-looking points along the edges. Unlike many true cacti, Stapelia typically has no sharp spines, making it comfortable to place where you pass by often, such as a desk, kitchen shelf or a narrow hallway ledge. As a succulent, it stores water in its stems and prefers a simple, restrained care routine.

Plant care

  • Light requirements: Bright light to full sun. A few hours of gentle direct sun (morning or late afternoon) helps keep growth compact. Introduce stronger sun gradually and avoid harsh midday sun behind glass if the plant is not acclimatised.
  • Watering routine: Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce significantly—often only occasional small amounts are needed.
  • Humidity preferences: Dry to average indoor humidity. Good airflow helps prevent soft stems and moisture-related issues.
  • Temperature range: Best at typical indoor temperatures of 18–26°C. Keep above 10–12°C and protect from cold drafts and damp, cold soil.

Growth and characteristics

  • Plant species: Stapelia (succulent)
  • Mature height: Typically stays compact; over time it can form a broader clump as it produces offsets
  • Leaf or flower type: Leafless, ribbed stems; may produce star-shaped flowers under strong light and warm conditions
  • Growth speed: Slow to moderate, depending on light and warmth

Placement in the home

Place Stapelia where light is consistent and strong: a bright windowsill in the living room, a kitchen window, or a sunny shelf near glass. Its upright form suits calm interiors where clean lines and proportion matter, and the small pot size makes it useful in tighter spots—on a bedside table, a home office desk, or grouped with other succulents on a tray. If light is limited, it will cope, but growth may become looser and more stretched.

Care tips

Choose fast-draining soil. A cactus/succulent mix helps roots stay dry between waterings. If you repot, use a pot with drainage holes and avoid heavy, moisture-retentive compost.

Water with intention. When you water, soak the soil thoroughly and let excess drain away. Never leave the nursery pot standing in water in a cachepot or saucer.

Rotate for even growth. Turn the pot every few weeks so stems develop evenly toward the light source.

Read the stems. Firm stems indicate good balance. Soft, translucent or collapsing stems usually point to overwatering—extend the dry period and check that the soil drains freely.
